For years, following a course on paleography from Professor Jean Preston, then Curator of Rare Books at Princeton University Library, I would purchase manuscript leaves, hoping to use these in teaching such courses to scholars desiring to edit medieval texts. But later living as a hermit in one room above Florence did not give me space to teach nor a spare room to give hospitality to such a scholar. So this screen became the classroom, you the student. That has now all changed. The Times said the earliest intact codex to survive was found under the head of a twelve-old slave girl buried in a pauper’s grave in Egypt, that it was her beloved Psalter Times 14 September But the early Christians were still using rotuli, a fresco of St Petronilla, St Peter’s daughter, showing her in the Catacombs of Domitilla with a circular leather box, a capsa, stuffed full of such rotuli, an entire Bible, at her side, a bound Bible as codex at her side. Veneranda escorted by St Petronilla with Bible Catacomb of Domitilla, Cubicle of Veneranda, after Book production shifted from Rome with its decline, due to the breaking of the aquaducts, the cooking in lead pots, leading to impure water, brain damage, malaria, to the periphery, the margins. These Anglo-Saxon monks brought back to Wearmouth Jarrow Cassiodorus’ fine library, amongst the books Cassiodorus’ great pandect of the Bible, from which were copied such works as the Lindisfarne Gospels, a portion of a folio shown below, and the Codex Amiatinus , which then made its way back to Italy, being today in the Biblioteca Laurenziana in Florence.
History[ edit ] According to University of Southern California historian Jacob Soll , the term “think tank” is modern, but “it can be traced to the humanist academies and scholarly networks of the 16th and 17th centuries. A tradition of hiring teams of independent lawyers to advise monarchs about their financial and political prerogatives against the church spans from Charlemagne all the way to the 17th century, when the kings of France were still arguing about whether they had the right to appoint bishops and receive a cut of their income.
Carnegie charged trustees to use the fund to “hasten the abolition of international war, the foulest blot upon our civilization. Brookings and was conceived as a bipartisan “research center modeled on academic institutions and focused on addressing the questions of the federal government.
Importance of Accurate Ages to Understand Extinction. The concentration of Quaternary fossils in most geologic records is so sparse that we depend on the ages of detrital fossils from radiocarbon dating to estimate the timing of extirpation or extinction (e.g., refs.
No White Men cannot jump kings. A sequence must capture the maximum possible number of pieces. If more than one sequence qualifies, the capture must be done with a king instead of a man. If more than one sequence qualifies, the one that captures a greater number of kings must be chosen. If there are still more sequences, the one that captures a king first must be chosen.

A Book of Horrors The Alberta manuscript, fol. Donated to the university in , it is one of just a few surviving manuscript copies of an essay written by a French intellectual seeking to convince his countrymen to find and persecute witches. It offers important insights into the early history of the witch-hunts that plagued late medieval and early modern Europe.
The book itself is a beautiful—if tattered and damaged—example of the luxury volumes produced for the wealthiest princes in late medieval Europe. View a full digital version of the manuscript here. They testify to the ways that intellectuals, fired by good intentions and emboldened by institutional power, have sometimes arrived at truly inhumane conclusions see A Call to Arms.

Sketch of American mastodon Top and mammoth Bottom molars by Cuvier. Mastodon molars show a browser morphology specialized for crushing branches and leaves of trees and shrubs, whereas mammoth molars have the morphology of a grazer adapted to grasses and forbs. A few mastodon fossils appear in the late Pleistocene of northwestern North America Alaska and Yukon , dating to a time when the vegetation was dominated by grasses and forbs and mammoths were common.
Mammoths were larger than mastodons both in body and tusk size, and had teeth with a flatter morphology characterized by low enamel ridges across their width Fig. South of the ice sheets, at least three species of mammoths were present that are largely associated with grasslands or parkland ecosystems 7. In the north though, in the nonglaciated area of Alaska and Yukon referred to as eastern Beringia, only the woolly mammoth was present in the Late Pleistocene. The woolly mammoth occupied eastern Beringia, an area characterized by steppe-tundra, an expansive grass and forb-rich biome, and ranged repeatedly across the Bering land bridge with Eurasia 6 , 8.
Herein lies the problem that Zazula et al. Mastodon fossils occur much less frequently compared with the most common large herbivores of eastern Beringia, such as mammoth, horse, and bison, and at least some have radiocarbon dates between 35, and 18, 14C y B. This time represents the interval leading to the height of the last glacial maximum, when multiple lines of evidence indicate that Eastern Beringia was a cold, dry steppe-tundra environment presumably lacking in mastodon-suitable habitat 6 , 9.
Given this environmental setting, along with the adaptations and dietary preferences of mastodons, just what were they doing in the Arctic at this time?

The new map is a change from a draft version released last year that showed the fault zone ending on the western edge of Beverly Hills, near the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica boulevards. Based on more information, the state now says the fault zone extends a mile farther northeast, through Beverly Hills’ central district and into the city’s civic center area. The Santa Monica is one of several faults running through highly populated areas of Southern California to generate interest and concern from seismic experts and government officials.
The fault zone cuts through the heart of the Westside, straddling or paralleling Santa Monica Boulevard through Century City and Westwood before veering due west, with segments running into Brentwood, Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades. It’s capable of producing a major magnitude 7 earthquake. Experts believe the most recent earthquake on the Santa Monica fault occurred 1, to 3, years ago.
Over the last few years, the state has stepped up drawing official so-called Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zones across California, a required first step before seismic safety laws can apply to areas. Areas with fault zones face limits on development. Owners of properties in these zones are obligated to hire geologists to ensure that new buildings or major renovation projects aren’t located directly on an active fault line.
The Beverly Hills shopping district has some of the priciest retail real estate in the nation, but the area is already fairly developed out with a mix of shops and mid-rise office buildings. It’s unclear whether there are any major developments that haven’t yet been approved by local governments that are on the drawing board in the fault zone. During both the Sylmar and Napa earthquakes, homes built atop a fault suffered major damage as their foundations were torn apart, while homes just a few hundred feet away suffered far less damage, said Tim Dawson, senior engineering geologist with the California Geological Survey.
Larger buildings straddling a fault could be more vulnerable and completely collapse, Dawson said. The Santa Monica earthquake fault zone is generally 1, feet wide, and runs west of Beverly Hills for more than eight miles, with the zone running through the Westfield Century City mall and the Mormon temple.

Historical periods[ edit ] Scholars have traditionally divided the history of the library into five periods, Pre-Lateran, Lateran, Avignon, Pre-Vatican and Vatican. Only a handful of volumes survive from this period, though some are very significant. Lateran[ edit ] The Lateran era began when the library moved to the Lateran Palace and lasted until the end of the 13th century and the reign of Pope Boniface VIII , who died in , by which time he possessed one of the most notable collections of illuminated manuscripts in Europe.

Now that I have some bandwidth again, I am getting back to work on several pet projects including the Amazon EC2 Cluster. I’m giving an EC2 talk at Pycon in March, so I’m really on the hook to wrap up that series of posts now. The event which prompted this long overdue blog post was another pet project: I keep an eye on topics of interest using del. The site apparently developed from his work on The Open Library. Over the past year, I’ve been tagging interesting data I find on the web in del.
I wrote a quick python script to pull the relevant links from my del. Most of these datasets are related to machine learning, but there are a lot of government, finance, and search datasets as well. I probably won’t get around to organizing and posting them to the wiki myself, but theinfo community should be able to figure out what to do with them. The concept reminds me a lot of Jon Udell’s post on public data.
